El presente trabajo indaga en c\u00f3mo el proceso de modernizaci\u00f3n del Estado desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta principios del siglo XX, configur\u00f3 una cultura en la cual la ciencia y sus m\u00faltiples producciones, fueron colaborando en la modernizaci\u00f3n del pa\u00eds, y dibujando a trav\u00e9s de la vida urbana, las l\u00edneas f\u00e9rreas, la edificaci\u00f3n de puentes y caminos que impulso una conexi\u00f3n entre los territorios cada vez m\u00e1s eficiente. En este contexto, la profesionalizaci\u00f3n de la ingenier\u00eda adquiri\u00f3 un protagonismo creciente, tanto en la pr\u00e1ctica profesional como en su rol articulador de saberes cient\u00edficos al servicio del estado-naci\u00f3n que se consolidaba despu\u00e9s de la guerra del salitre. En este contexto, la figura del destacado ingeniero Domingo Santa Mar\u00eda M\u00e1rquez de la Plata (1854-1920) resulta clave para comprender el rol formativo de los ingenieros chilenos que se pusieron al alero del estado modernizador, Santa Mar\u00eda, fue un ejemplo significativo de este proceso, por sus aportes en la docencia, investigaci\u00f3n, innovaci\u00f3n tecnol\u00f3gica y su trabajo pol\u00edtico como diputado y ministro de estado.<\/p>\n
